The mobile application called CzechME was developed within the project TL01000342 Adaptable mobile application for teaching Czech to foreigners within the framework of the ÉTA programme of the Czech Technology Agency. The main project investigator was EVE Technologies, s. r. o., and the partner was the Institute of Czech Language of the Faculty of Arts of Masaryk University. The project ran from April 2018 to March 2021 and is now in the implementation phase.
CzechME provides users with over 200 lessons designed for learning and practicing the Czech language. The exercises focus on spelling, grammar and vocabulary and strengthen listening, reading and writing competences. Unlike other applications of this kind, it also includes a module for practicing correct Czech pronunciation and is able to adapt to the individual user's successes and failures during the lessons. The user will encounter not only text but also recordings of native speakers, photographs, pictures and so-called visual grammar during the lessons. In the basic version, the intermediary language is English with the option to switch the interpretation to English.
The application is intended primarily for beginners in the Czech Republic and abroad who are just starting to learn Czech (it covers levels A0-A2). A large part of the target group of users is applicants for permanent residence and Czech citizenship. In 2022, the group was expanded to include refugees from Ukraine, for whom translation of accompanying texts, vocabulary and instructions into Ukrainian is prepared. Other language options can be implemented based on user requirements. The application is also intended for foreigners working in international companies in the Czech Republic, students of Bohemian studies at foreign universities, participants of summer schools of Slavic studies, students coming under the Erasmus+ programme and students of language courses of Czech Centres abroad. For this large group of foreigners, the app provides the opportunity to learn Czech at a level they can speak in all common situations of life in the Czech Republic.
